Monster
Crap Inductee: Beyond The Call Of Duty (aka Beyond The Call To Duty)
This
Movie Deserves A Court Martial
2016
This
may shock folks, but I have NOT seen every movie with a monster. In fact, I may
have only seen 65% and getting smaller every year with new films. But like this
film, most of you haven’t seen this film either so it is forgivable. But I know
one person who has seen this film and that person is Groose, who gave me the
request to induct this film.
We also
have a Monster Crap alumni here with Michael O’Hear
Brenda
Rickert…
Daniel
James (who played someone named Jason in Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast), and
Lori Cholewka (who played a Town Hall Extra in…you guessed it, Snow Shark:
Ancient Snow Beast)
Now
with such a no name cast (except for those in Snow Shark: Ancient Snow Beast),
it is time to see if this film I have never heard of has a reason to be completely
forgotten or is something someone that may be worth seeing for how bad it is.
And
before anyone asks, this movie has NOTHING to do with the popular video game
series or any franchise whatsoever.
We
begin in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
If Your
First Name Is Franz Or Your Last Name Ferdinand, Watch Yourself
We then
see two Americans being held hostage by terrorists and obviously cocaine is on
the table.
Probably
Not Wise To Film Your Drugs In A Movie
Anyway,
the lead terrorist is this guy.
A
hostage is brought in and they demand he give them the code for the missiles.
The one
guy in a suit is also a hostage and is a translator as well who tells the other
hostage to give them the launch codes and the restrained hostage says that he
should tell the terrorists to go fuck themselves. He gets pistol whipped as we
then go outside and we see terrorist guards just smoking.
Really
Convincing Terrorists, Filmmakers
They
get taken out by two guys of Alpha Squad in Blonde Guy and Headband Guy.
We then
get a girl fight between two women and while we know which one is the hero by
what they are wearing, the other woman doesn’t look that convincing of a
terrorist.
And
when I say fight…..it’s this kind of horrible fighting.
The
translator tries to tell the other hostage that if he doesn’t give them the
code, they will be killed. The restrained hostage says if he gives them the
codes, millions will die and the terrorists will kill them anyway. The
translator tries to say he has a family, but the hostage with the codes doesn’t
care. Another terrorist is getting sick and doesn’t know what is wrong with
him.
So more
snooping around by the good guys who we don’t know who they are yet. Another
terrorist is killed and the two ladies are still fighting, but at least we find
out the lady hero is named Cassandra “Cassie” Stinson.
That Is
The Blonde Lady Of Course
Blonde
Guy sees the targets and asks for permission to engage, but the situation has
apparently changed because there are two hostages and they are told to abort
the mission. Blonde guy says “fuck your orders” and they prepare to engage.
Meanwhile, we see lead terrorist get pissed and he decides to kill the
translator.
Another
terrorist asks who is going to translate now and the lead terrorist threatens
to kill him. The good guys finally engage and they have to lay down their guns
after the terrorists threaten the hostage’s death. We then find out the one
terrorist who asked why kill the translator was a spy and that spy kills the
lead terrorist.
As the
good guys and hostage kill the remaining terrorists, Cassie finally kills that
terrorist girl.
Finally….
Blonde
guy said he always knew there was a mole in the operation and then when asked
how did he know that, he fesses up and said he didn’t know. They all leave out
the door and Cassie joins them. Blonde guy says he knows some Serbian to the
mole, tries to speak it, and the mole says he got it wrong. They sneak around,
but a terrorist sniper has eyes on them.
Sniper,
No Sniping!!!
But
good news for them is they have their own sniper who takes him out.
Named
Ronald Gallo
And
then we see coughing terrorists who looks like he has seen better days.
If You
Are Wondering Where This Is Going, It’s Going Absolutely Nowhere As He Is Never
Seen Again.
Then we
finally get the title card.
As the
credits role, we go to a laboratory. And for some reason we see the opening
title card again.
Just In
Case You Didn’t See It The First Time
We then
finally meet Dr. Nicholas Bergman (who I’m calling Dr. Nick) and his assistant
Dr. William Fenenko (who I’m calling Dr. Will)
Dr.
Nick here says his father would have figured out this formula if had more time
to live. Dr. Will says that Dr. Nick should use his contacts, who will help
him. Dr. Nick doesn’t want to use the contacts so Dr. Will tells him to use him,
which Dr. Nick doesn’t want to do either. Dr. Will says Dr. Nick has used the
formula on himself so he should use it on him. Dr. Nick’s response is “Then so
be it”.
We then
go to a meeting of Human Interest Parties and their goal is to make an
investment that will change the world.
A
gentleman named I don’t know says that he came across Dr. Nick’s work and
thinks they should invest in him.
Some on
this board are against this, finding Dr. Nick’s work rather out of the realm of
reality and dangerous since it deals with the cure to everything including
aging. After arguments, they agree to fund it, but I don’t know cant come with
them to see the research. We then see a video diary of Dr. Nick who says he has
grown impatient as he has used all of his resources. But he has the investors
coming and if everything goes well, he will have enough funds to continue his
father’s research. And if things go bad, god help them all.
We then
gets some generic country music as the heroes from the mission in Bosnia come
home. The montage takes several minutes for no real reason. We finally see
locker room talk as Ronald is upset about the mission, but Blonde Guy thinks it
went fine. Ronald is upset that the translator got killed and blames it on info
Blonde Guy got as well as Blonde Guy going against what HQ said, which was back
down (even though the translator got killed before any of that happened). We
find out that Blonde Guy’s name is Keith Watzel and Headband Guy is named Scott
Hoover.
We also
find out that their boss’ name is Roy Weiss who both Keith and Scott hate. And
we meet Roy soon as they shown their disgust for him.
I Get A
Sense That People Are Being Mean To Me Behind My Back And That Makes Me Sad
He gets
told that his squad has returned from a mission and then we go to the dining
area of this base as Scott can’t wait to get his hands on some real food. After
some shit talking and Scott needing to take a dump…
We
Seriously Get This As We Get A Joke About There Being No Toilet Paper
We then
see them all working out at the gym. One of the soldiers gives Keith shit about
the fuck up (that wasn’t really a fuck up) and says he might take his spot as
leader of Alpha Squad. Keith keeps trying to hit on Cassie and Cassie is not
that into him. Cassie and Ronald talk about family stuff and them eventually
being able to take time off. Sure hope something doesn’t happen to screw that
all up.
After
taking a shower, Roy tells Ronald that he needs to get dressed and come with
him as there is a special briefing going on. Ronald isn’t happy as he wants to
see his son. Cassie goes for a swim as Keith and Scott are also told by another
guy that they need to be at a briefing. After Cassie gets out of the pool, she
is also told about the briefing she needs to attend.
They
all get to the briefing where they are told by Rick Dallas that promised time
off is gone and in a few days, they will
be on another mission of great importance.
Trust Me, He's Awake Despite The Picture I Got.
Keith
is upset, but is told by Roy to stand down. After the meeting, Keith and Scott
are wondering what they are hiding and Roy just says they are thinking way too
much about this. He says they should just follow orders and Keith says in a
snarky way that Roy is like a good little captain in following orders without
asking questions. Roy tells them all to take a few days off to unwind before
this mission. Keith and Scott want to go out and drink while Ronald thinks that
this will obviously cause Keith to start a fight, yet Cassie seems fine with
drinking to the shock of Keith.
So we
go to the bar with a band playing called Bar King.
Scott
is already drunk when Keith arrives in the tightest shirt he can find. Cassie
ends up being the person to take Scott home because he is getting sick. Keith
then decides that he is going to start getting drunk. He tries to ask for the
female bartender’s number and she turns him down. Ronald is kind of depressed
as he saw a picture of his wife and kid with his kid having a toy soldier as he
doesn’t want his kid having the same life he has. He still wants to spend more
time with his family. Keith says he has not found the right woman yet to be
with for the rest of his life and Ronald jokes that Keith is kind of an
asshole.
Keith
then says that since he is the best looking guy in this bar, Ronald should pick
a girl and Keith will try to take her home. Ronald tries to pick some cute
girls, but they aren’t Keith’s type. So Keith decides that he is going to pick
the girl to hit on and he chooses this girl.
Ronald
tries to warn him that she is obviously on a date with a guy and Keith doesn’t
care. He tries to talk to the girl and her boyfriend is already pissed at him.
Keith
of course is an asshole and doesn’t care that she is already on a date with
another guy so a fight starts.
The
bartender yells that she is calling the cops.
Meanwhile,
Cassie takes Scott to her place to sleep for the night. We then go to the next
day and somewhere else where a couple is walking down a river path.
They
are also in an argument as the guy is taking the girl on this trek, yet he
doesn’t know how to fish and has only one Rice Krispie Treat to eat. They walk
into a property and there seem to be dead people here.
The guy
tells the lady to call the cops as he goes to check on the body. Sadly there is
no service and the body is actually a zombie who attacks the guy.
The guy
is about to hit him with a rock, but the zombie is shot by Dr. Nick.
Hi,
Everybody
Dr.
Nick then decides to break the guy’s neck.
Dr.
Nick’s Chiropractic Skills Need Some Work
And
shoots the lady as she tries to run away.
No
Witnesses…
And now
we go to a place with files with these two guys.
Who Are
Seriously Credited As Archive Guard And The Spy
The spy
tries to take a file (saying he works in this sector for the president) and the
archive guard says he is not allowed to take that file. The archive guard draws
a gun on him and the spy puts the file down. The archive guard then puts his
gun away and tries to lead the spy out so the spy draws his own gun and shoots
the archive guard.
Well, I
Am A Spy After All
Roy and
Ronald show up and the spy and his men have to deal with them.
Roy And
Ronald Make Quick Work Of The Men And Capture The Spy
Roy and
Ronald then go to Rick’s office and ask him about the file that the spy and his
men were trying to steal. Roy says that the files pertain to the mission and
why were they trying to steal it. He sends them away after an argument, not
divulging any new info. Ronald still wants to know what is in those files, but
Roy wants to play it by the book and thinks Rick will tell his father (who is I
guess the unit’s boss) and the father will tell them so no need to cause an
issue. We then see Keith get bailed out of prison.
The
woman who brings him here is Kate and Keith tries to hit on her too.
She Too
Is Annoyed By Keith
She
tells Roy to never call him again for a favor and to keep his dog (Keith) on a
leash. She pie faces Keith after he wants her number and leaves. And then we
get Monster Crap worthy line delivery as we get sad music and Keith doesn’t
want to hear any of Roy’s talking down too. Roy wants to get back to the base
and Keith says he doesn’t give a damn about Roy’s rank. Keith complains that he
does all the heavy lifting and Roy gets a promotion. Keith spits on Roy’s shoe
and says that he knows that promotion belonged to him and the only reason Roy
got it was because of his father. Roy punches him and tells Keith to find his
own way back. Keith is upset that Roy hit him and has the nerve to just walk
away. Ronald is here too and tries to play peacemaker, but when Roy tells
Ronald to come with him, Keith makes fun of Ronald for being loyal to Roy like
a dog. Keith just says that he is done with all this shit and leaves. I’m sorry
I can’t show you the scene of even give quotes to it, but it is just beautiful.
Meanwhile
we see Scott make a call to his father.
Played
By Artimus Pyle, The Drummer For Lynyrd Skynyrd. Seriously!
They
have a heart to heart moment over the phone. We also find out that Scott is
declared dead and missed his own funeral. Scott asks how mom is and Mr. Hoover
says that she has been better. Mr. Hoover tells Scott that he needs to come
home and Scott says that he can’t. Scott says that for once in his life he has
responsibilities and he can’t leave those behind just because his dad thinks he
doesn’t belong in the military. He says he would rather die young than die as
an old miserable man.
Considering
This Is The Drummer For Lynyrd Skynyrd Who Survived A Freaking Plane Crash That
Killed Members Of His Own Band And He Was The One Who Was Able To Lead
Authorities To The Crash, Which Saved Some Lives As Well…..This Kind Of Is
Insulting.
Meanwhile,
Cassie decides to visit her grandmother who is in hospice care and the nurse
who checks in on her, lets her in.
Cassie
tells her grandmother that she missed her and there is no excuse as to why she
hasn’t visited her in so long. She then says that her grandmother shouldn’t
need to worry about her anymore as she is doing fine and found people who
finally care about her like Keith, Roy, Ronald, and Scott. She tells her
grandmother that she is going on another mission soon and she plans on this
being her last mission with Alpha Squad. She says that if she comes back alive,
then she will visit her again. The grandmother speaks and says she will come
back alive, which gives Cassie a chuckle.
By The
Way, The Old Lady Does Not Even Realize This Is Her Granddaughter And Thinks
She Is Just Talking To A Random Nice Person. That Is Not Something That A
Granddaughter Really Likes Hearing.
Cassie
then meets up with Scott at a restaurant and reveals that her grandmother has
Alzheimer’s Disease. We then go elsewhere where there be zombies roaming about.
Dr. Nick does another video log about his experiments as one of his zombies is
showing promise as parts of his body are starting to solidify into metal.
Also
the zombie has memories and sees Dr. Nick as the enemy.
And
This Is Our Zombie Known Only As Steel
Thankfully
Not That Steel
Well,
it is now mission time as the group gets armed and Keith has come back. Keith
asks Ronald why he isn’t wearing a wedding ring since he is married and Ronald
says he is wearing it, but as a necklace instead. Keith asks why he does that
and Ronald says he does it to keep it close to his heart. Scott and Cassie show
up and they also know about Keith getting arrested. Roy is then called in the
office by his father Colonel Howard Weiss
Howard
tells him about the mission which is that multiple people in a small town have
been reported missing. While Howard does trust Rick, he doesn’t 100% trust the
info that he has been given and warned his son that he and his unit might be
falling into a trap. Roy assures his dad that they will be fine.
So they
are in the forest heading to the area of the mission. At the area, we get a lot
of sneaking around by Alpha Squad until the find documents of experiments going
on in the area. The confusing thing for them is there are no names, just
letters and numbers. Outside, Ronald thinks he hears something, but goes back
to waiting after looking around. He then looks and sees a zombie so he radios
the others about movement and goes to see what the movement is. He confronts
one of the obvious zombies when more show up to attack.
He
shoots several, but the bullet do nothing to stop them. He gets swarmed and
killed. Keith sees this and shouts. Cassie and Roy also shows up and they start
shooting. Keith wonders what is going on and Roy thinks they should retreat. They
try to radio HQ about aborting the mission, but they do not get a response. Keith
wants to control the situation, but Roy says no. They go inside the farm and to
the basement. Keith wonders what those things were and Scott has papers, saying
they were experiments. They also mention that those investors from earlier that
left I don’t know behind went missing. We also find out these zombies are super
enhanced. Cassie and Roy will scout ahead while Keith and Scott will watch the
rear.
After a
room, Roy has the other three scout ahead while he looks around. The other
three find bodies in the next room and they think this might have been a setup.
They then meet Dr. Nick and he basically admits that he is responsible for all
of this. He admits the use of the town and the investors as experiments was all
last resort because the government stopped funding his research. He basically
reveals that his father discovered the fountain of youth under Hitler’s orders,
but the research turned chaotic and the lab had to be destroyed, but his father
saved samples. He injected himself with the samples to get across to America
without customs busting him. Dr. Nick said the samples flow through his veins
as he is 66 years old yet doesn’t look it. He reveals that he has sold this
experiment to dealers all over the world and this won’t stop with just him.
He then
walks away and more zombies show up to attack Alpha Squad. Roy also gets
attacked, but he is able to kill most of them by shooting them in the head. Roy
goes to the lab and sees Dr. Nick so he tries to go after him. We go back to
the rest of Alpha Squad still dealing with most of the zombies and they start
shooting zombies in the head. Keith gets bit, but unlike most zombie movies….he
doesn’t turn into a zombie. They decide to retreat from the room they are in.
Back to
Dr. Nick, he is cornered by Roy. He says that if he is killed, there will be no
way to prevent a major outbreak so he is trying to use that as leverage to be
allowed to get away. Another zombie escapes and Dr. Nick runs away. We then get
a close quarter combat battle between Roy and this zombie.
In
another room, Keith gets his wound taped up by Cassie. They are then confronted
by Steel.
Dr.
Nick goes outside and shoots more zombies, except the zombie of his former
associate Dr. Will, who he just leaves.
Back
with Keith, Cassie, and Scott having to deal with Steel. They try to shoot
Steel, but the bullets just bounce off him. Keith then decides to try and fight
Steel without a gun. Cassie tries to intervene, but gets her hand broken and
she is then killed, which upsets Keith and Scott. Keith grabs a pipe and
attacks Steel with it. More zombies show up and Scott has to shoot one up
close, but sadly it was near his ear so he gets a ringing from it. Steel also
for some reason attacks the other zombies so it seems he just hates everyone. Keith
then grabs a grenade and Steel and blows the two of them up.
We
Don’t See The Explosion, But We Hear It As Scott Gets Away.
Scott
looks around, trying to find a way to get out. Scott goes to the wall and just
sits down, reminiscing about the deaths of his comrades. He then comes face to
face with the zombie version of Ronald.
He
hesitates to shoot Ronald in the head and Ronald pounces, impaling Scott with a
pipe.
Scott
finally shoots Ronald and gets himself unimpaled from the pipe. And then we go
to the mission aftermath. Seriously, we don’t see how the mission ended, but we
get told it during an interrogation scene.
We then
see Mr. Hoover get word that Scott has returned home, but he is in critical
condition. Meanwhile, Howard is upset as we are made to believe his son Roy
didn’t make it. We then have an interrogation between Rick Dallas and the spy which
basically there is a zombie outbreak going on. We even see a scene where a
mother is holding her dead daughter as zombies want into the house.
Anyway,
they want to find Dr. Nick and the spy wont give up where he is. We then find
out Roy did make it after all and he wants to have a few words with the spy.
Roy
tells the spy that he is coming with him back to Bergman’s lab in hopes of
stopping this. We then go to Dr. Nick as he is meeting with the guy whose name
I do not know from the Human Interest Parties. Basically, that guy who I don’t
know the name of basically had all of this planned with Dr. Nick and now the
world will fall into chaos, which ultimately….they will be on top of. We find
out that Dr. Nick is now a member of the Illuminati.
Yeah….Avoid
Our Representative In Texas With Body Piercings As He Likes To Deal With Crazy
Matthew McConaughey And His Crazy Redneck Family.
And
that is where our movie ends.
So I
have no idea how this movie did, but probably not well as there is no sequel
which I assume was wanted based on stuff being left open ended. The only thing
I do know about the aftermath of this film is the director of this film,
Aleksander Ivicic, decided to change his name to just Xander. Nobody really did
anything of note for me after this film.
We
sadly have a few passings since this film came out and one actually happened
before the film was released (telling you this film took years to make) as Dean
Stock (who played one of the investors) died in 2015 at the age of 54. Michael
O’Hear (who played Howard Weiss) passed away in 2020 at the age of 56 (kind of
sucks he had no RIP since he was a major character in Snow Shark: Ancient Snow
Beast, but I didn’t know until this induction that he passed away).
So now
onto my final thoughts onto this film and truly this is a tale of two films.
One film has soap opera overacting that makes me laugh at how bad it is and the
other film is missing stuff that leaves me confused, but yet too bored to find
out why. The practical effects at times are fine and terrible at times. There
is a reason this film is not known by most people and that is because it is not
worth mentioning other than the bad acting at times. Maybe someday, Xander will
explain what happened with this film and explain why scenes like the survivors
of Alpha Squad escaping the zombie attack are missing or the zombies going
insane on town, but until then….this is all we get and it just feels like not
worth my time to investigate.
Now it
is December and I promised back in January that I would induct the 2024 GINO
Award Winner here because it’s a Christmas movie, so now it is time to deliver.
See You
Then.
