RIP Rutger Hauer
1944 - 2019
It truly is a sad day that yesterday, one of the best character actors that had been around in Rutger Hauer has passed away at the age of 75 following a bout with an unspecified illness. You may know him for being villains in films like Blade Runner and The Hitcher, as well as hero in films like Hobo With A Shotgun, and important side characters in films like Sin City and Batman Begins. It truly sucks to see to hear that a character actor who has done so much memorable moments for Hollywood films. To steal from his awesome monologue in a way, his acting will not "be lost in time, like tears in the rain"
As for Monster Crap, while he has not been in a Monster Crap film yet, he will be this October as we will be honoring Mr. Hauer by inducting one of 8 films that he was a part of. It is the least Monster Crap could do. However, before I do my usual "he will be missed line", I want to echo a quote he made in an interview.
"Film is not a medium for actors. Everyone seems to think so, since it is the actors who get promoted to stardom. Creating stars is only a marketing ploy. It's the stars that sell a movie. That same technique is used in selling music, baseball games, and hamburgers. An actor does not make or break a movie. Some of them look good on screen, but they are not important. How many extremely bad movies are there with one good or very good actor, or even two or three very good actors in the credits? I like to think of myself as a good actor, and even I made a lot of bad movies. Why are good actors no longer good when they play in a bad movie? And how many good movies have actors that are normally mediocre at best?"
Oh, how mostly true that is. He will truly be sorely missed.
